The signal corps was used to pass messages over large distances, messages were created using a combination of the numbers 1,2,3 and a pause.
1; This is denoted by lowering the flag on the left.
2; This is denoted by lowering the flag on the right.
3; This is denoted by lowing the flag directly in front.
A pause is denoted by holding the flag upright.
